Sioux Falls Offering Buyouts to Homeowners to Curb Flooding

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Several homeowners in a central Sioux Falls neighborhood have been approached by local officials regarding possible buyout offers as part of an effort to curb flooding in the city.

KELO-TV reports that homes in the neighborhood near Augustana University could be demolished to create green space. The city's move comes after heavy rains in August flooded the neighborhood.

Environmental and storm water manager Andrew Berg says this is a voluntary buyout, and no homeowners will be forced to sell their property to the city.

More than half a foot of rain fell in parts of Sioux Falls August 28th, leading to flash flooding that inundated basements, stranded dozens of motorists and disrupted electricity service.

The station reports city officials are contacting property owners first before releasing a finalized plan.
