Sioux Falls Police arrested a man for damaging the Salmon Run Bear Sculpture in downtown Sioux Falls over the weekend.

Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens says an officer witnessed the crime.

"We had an off-duty officer who was in the area and saw a man climb up on top of the sculpture. While he was on it, he ended up damaging it. Part of that sculpture broke off," said Clemens.

"The officer was able to call police and kept an eye on the suspect until police got there. They ended up arresting him for intentional damage to property. The sculpture is valued at $16,000. We are not sure of the extent of the damage."

Clemens identified the suspect as 24-year-old Casey Schmidt of Sioux Falls.
