Shelter for Human Trafficking Victims Eyeing August Opening

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A shelter in central South Dakota for female victims of human trafficking is now eyeing an August opening.

Officials had hoped to open the Pathfinder Center in a former motel early this year but didn't have the necessary funds.

Executive Director Lisa Heth tells KCCR radio that officials are hoping to get a state grant and also seeking other sources of funding.

The 14-bed shelter will be run by Wiconi Wawokiya, a nonprofit on the Crow Creek reservation that helps abused children and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
