Netflix Subscribers Need to Watch out for Personal Information Scam

Unfortunately in today's society fraud is about as common as the nose on your face. It seems like there's always somebody cooking up new and different ways to attempt to relieve you of your hard earned cash. That's why you need to know about a new phishing scam that’s currently targeting Netflix customers.

Numerous Netflix subscribers have reported receiving a bogus email stating their Netflix account is about to be canceled if they don't update their payment information immediately.

The scary thing in all this, the email looks very real.

KDLT TV is reporting the would be scammers have created a phony website and a phony email that looks nearly identical to Netflix’s information.

The message some Netflix subscribers are receiving resembles this:

According to KDLT TV, the email prompts subscribers to update their payment information or their account will be canceled. Once, they click on the link it redirects them to a fake Netflix page.

The fake site requires you to answer a series of questions that include; asking for your credit card number, card expiration date, card security code, and social security number.

If you receive such an email, experts say you need to pay attention to the URL.

Jessie Schmidt, State Director for the Better Business Bureau for South Dakota says, "The link is typically just slightly different. So we always tell people to be very careful when you click on a link because you may be downloading malware to your own computer that will capture your sensitive information as well."

Authorities say the sure way to avoid falling victim to a scam is to ignore emails from sites asking for your personal information, and always call the company if you are suspicious about something.

If you feel like you've become a victim of fraud, police say you should first, report it to your financial institution if you gave out a credit card number. Then file a police report to make authorities aware of the situation.

Netflix advises anyone worried about being affected by this potential scam to contact their customer service number at 1 (866) 579-7172.

The good news for all of us here in the Sioux Empire, the Sioux Falls police say they haven’t received any calls about this scam. But it's definitely something that should be on your radar.
