Just before the NBA Finals begin, the Sioux Falls Skyforce and Miami Heat announce the next phase in their partnership. The parent franchise now owns a controlling interest in their affiliate.

After four years as an exclusive Heat affiliate, the Skyforce have proved their worth as a pipeline for NBA-caliber talent. Percentage-wise it’s the best four-year stretch in team history, barely surpassing the glory days from 1994-98 with each of those eras netting a championship.

2013-17 Record: 129-71 (.645)
1994-98 Record: 144-80 (.643)

Each prior agreement between the two entities were two years in length. This partnership looks to be long-term in nature.

For now, nothing will change from the past four years on the basis of what is seen on the court. Heat Assistant General Manager Adam Simon will continue his role as Skyforce General Manager.

Off the court will continue the same, as well. The staff in Sioux Falls office will continue in their mission to provide the community with the best atmosphere possible for players and fans. In a press release, President Mike Heineman expressed his excitement about the new chapter.

“We are so proud to enter into this partnership with the Miami Heat. They have been so good for the Skyforce and for the city of Sioux Falls. To be able to expand our partnership with Miami while keeping the team in Sioux Falls were our two biggest goals throughout this process.”

For now KD, Steph and LeBron have the stage. Come November, the ‘Force will be with us for season number 29.
