How was your 4th of July?  Did everyone celebrate safely? It seems like pretty much everyone around the Sioux Falls tri-state area does a pretty good job when it comes to fireworks safety.

Sure there are always a few stories of people making bad choices.  But what was this guy from Maine thinking?

22-year-old Devon Staples of Calais, Maine was hanging out drinking with some friends on July 4th, and they were messing around with some fireworks.

Devon came up with the idea that he'd try to launch one off of his head.  So he put a fireworks mortar tube on his head and lit it.

When the firework exploded it, not surprisingly, it caused a serious head injury. And he died instantly.  Yes he had been drinking.

According to bangordailynews.com:

“When he suggested he was going to do this, his friends gathered around him and they thought they had convinced him not to do it.  But before they could react, Staples set off the explosive."

The firework was described as being a reloadable mortar tube available in consumer fireworks stores around the state."
