YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — Participation far exceeded expectations for an event in Yankton trying to capitalize on the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in the western Black Hills.

More than 200 motorcycle enthusiasts registered for the inaugural Rock 'N' Rumble event in Yankton on Saturday, held two days before the start of the Sturgis rally on Monday.

Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Stephanie Moser told the Daily Press & Dakotan that organizers were hoping for 50. And she says total turnout was about 400.

The event sought to lure both bikers headed to Sturgis and those interested in a closer venue. It included a parade, a barbecue and musical entertainment.

State Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen earlier said the event is a good way to showcase eastern South Dakota to Sturgis bikers.
