Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens says a Sioux Falls resident was robbed at gunpoint Friday night as he was walking along 4th Street and Sherman Avenue.

"The victim said a car drove up next to him. Three black men were inside. Two of them got out. Both of them had guns. They pointed the guns at the victim. They took his billfold and cell phone. They got back in the car and drove away."

If you're in a similar situation, how should you respond?

"This was a difficult situation. If someone is pointing a gun at you or any type of weapon the best thing is to follow their direction. You can always replace property at some other point in time. We really want to keep people as safe as we can. If you are confronted, do what you're asked."

What about defending yourself with pepper spray?

"The one thing people don't realize is it takes time for pepper spray to work. It could be 30 seconds to a minute before it works. There's a lot that can happen in that amount of time. It's best not to anger someone if they are pointing a gun at you."

Fortunately, Clemens says the victim in the Friday night armed robbery was not harmed.
