Highway or Byway Motorcyclists?

Now that it's warmed up enough to where we can get our bikes out of storage, I'm curious all you fellow motorcycle riders - highway or byway? Which do your prefer?

I know of some riders who will only ride the interstates. They like to get where they're going in a hurry so they can spend more time checking out wherever they're at.

And then I know others who will take any road other than the interstate system. Their argument is they like to find those hidden treasures and discover breathtaking scenery.

I've also found there's a third type of rider - the one who takes the quick one day interstate ride so they can enjoy the next six days riding only back roads on their way home.

For me, I'm a back roads kind of rider all the way. There's nothing quite like experiencing the clean, fresh smell of the outdoors. It gives me a real sense of freedom.

Plus, I'm a firm believer the best bakeries and pie shops are found in the small town, mom and pop places. There's nothing better than a fresh piece of pie about mid afternoon.

When riding the back roads, however, you always have to keep an eye out for that stray calf that got out of its pen, or that stopped farm tractor in the middle of the road.

I've also never been one who enjoyed riding at night - way too many things can go wrong. If I have to ride in the dark, I always try to stay on the major highways or interstates.

For me, the real soul of America can only be experienced by riding back roads. That's where the friendliest folks are, and an unpredictable adventure 'round every corner.
