South Dakota is looking for a few good artists to help design the crest for the new U.S.S. South Dakota.

The U.S.S. South Dakota is a SSN-790 nuclear submarine that is slated to set sail in August of 2018 with a crew of 131.

It will be the first Navy vessel bearing the state's name since the U.S.S. South Dakota battle ship was commissioned back in 1942. The battle ship had a storied war record. It was actually slated to be the site of the Japanese signing the surrender documents ending World War II in August 1945, but Harry Truman, president at the time, instead arranged to have the U.S.S. Missouri, named after his home state be the setting for the surrender. What the hell Harry? Thanks a lot!

The new Navy attack submarine is currently being built in Virginia. Its commanding Officer Ron Withrow says a crest provides the crew with an identity and serves as a symbol of mission and culture.

South Dakota Lt. Gov. Matt Michels said the new sub should carry a crest designed by someone who calls South Dakota home.

If you're interested in submitting a design, entries will be accepted in four categories - elementary school, middle school, high school and open class.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three designs in each class.
