A few more Sioux Falls neighborhoods could see brighter nights in 2016.

In May of this year, the city of Sioux Falls launched an LED streetlight pilot project in six neighborhoods, and now the city plans to expand the project next year.

Jerry Jongeling, the Light and Power Superintendent for Sioux Falls says, the city can run an LED streetlight for 11 cents per day, in comparison to the 33 cents per day typically spent to power a standard light.

At first glance, LED streetlights appear to have a number of benefits over the current standard lights being used on the majority of city streets.

Besides being brighter, they last longer. The new street lights are expected to last at least 100,000 hours.  They have proven to save the city money on its energy bills and they were also praised by residents who responded to an online survey.

The proposed 2016 city budget would bring LED streetlights to up to an additional 18 Sioux Falls neighborhoods according to Jongeling.
